Halloween, a holiday first observed by the Celts some 2,000 years ago, was celebrated at all The Allure Group’s centers.

FYI: The Celts inhabited an area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and France,  a very large trick-or-treat territory indeed.

Allure Celebrates National Case Management Week

Allure celebrated National Case Management Week the week of Oct. 10, a date first reserved 20 years ago by the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) to honor care managers, which that organization defines as “advocates who help patients understand their current health status, what they can do about it and why those treatments are important.”

The goal of National Case Management Week is not only to celebrate those who assume such roles but also to encourage those in the field to raise awareness of the industry.

Crown Heights Celebrates End of Hispanic Heritage Month With A Dance Performance

allure-group-newsletter3

A dance performance was held in the Crown Heights Center to mark the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, the origins of which can be traced to 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation designating the week that included Sept. 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The first of those dates marks the anniversaries of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, while the second marks Mexico’s independence.

In 1988, Congress passed legislation designating mid September to mid October as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Linden Center Continues Art Therapy Sessions

ART-T19-allure-group allure-group-newsletter-6 allure-group-newsletter-5 allure-group-newsletter-4

Art therapy sessions like those being held at the Linden Center are defined by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) as sessions that meld “knowledge and understanding of human development and psychological theories and techniques with visual arts and the creative process to provide a unique approach for helping clients improve psychological health, cognitive abilities, and sensory-motor functions.”

There is, in addition, a social element to such gatherings. They can serve as stress-relievers, improve self-esteem, improve the dexterity of those struggling with one condition or another, and even sharpen the minds of those afflicted with dementia.

Melissa Powell in CFO.com

Allure COO Melissa Powell, writing for the website CFO.com, opines that a business concept known as radical transparency — i.e., complete openness within a company — certainly has its place, but is not necessarily right for every organization. The problem, she points out, is that not everyone wants to hear blunt assessments about themselves, that indeed they even have a hard time even believing they have shortcomings.

For proof, Melissa offered this example: Respondents to a 1997 survey gave themselves an 87 percent chance of getting into heaven, while putting Mother Teresa’s odds at 79 percent.

Ponder that a moment. They gave themselves a better chance of making it to the Pearly Gates than a woman who spent her life giving of herself.

August Newsletter 2019

Melissa Powell Published in CEO World and quoted in a skilled nursing news piece

Allure COO Melissa Powell writes about the importance of a business leader establishing a culture in which employees are fully engaged in her piece “New Rules For Effective Leadership,” which was posted on CEO World’s website.

Creating such a culture is no small challenge, Melissa writes, but greatly impacts performance, retention and patient outcomes. And the general consensus seems to be that leaders can bring out the best in their employees by concentrating on such soft skills as communication, transparency and empathy.

Melissa Powell also discussed the importance of a skilled nursing operator meeting insurance providers halfway in a piece on Skilled Nursing News’ website entitled “I-SNP Exec: Skilled Nursing Operators Must Approach Insurers to Succeed — But Few Do.”  She was quoted as saying that SNF operators too often take to heart what they have “been taught to believe about” themselves, notably that they are in a position where they must simply follow the lead of others.

That is changing, she told Skilled Nursing News:

“Some of the things that we’re able to now bring to an Advantage plan, and talk about what we can do for them, didn’t exist (as recently as three or four years ago).”

Longevity Garden Team Attends 2019 Good Health Day

The Longevity Garden Team attended Good Health Day, which was sponsored by the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and held in early August. The event, which has been held for over 30 years, features free screenings for such things as cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension, and health activity booths health activity booths that address concerns like oral health, diabetes, cardiovascular health, pediatrics and women’s health issues. There were also demonstrations of things like CPR, Zumba and martial arts.

Linden Center Green Thumbs Club

The Linden Center recently held a meeting of its “Green Thumbs Club,” where the many virtues of gardening were discussed. Not only does it enable seniors to improve their mobility, flexibility, motor skills, endurance and strength, it also reduces stress, stimulates an interest in nature and provides nutritious food. While there are caveats, like seniors’ susceptibility to sunburn and dehydration, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Hamilton Park holds Bowling Competition

A bowling competition like the one held by Hamilton Park Center residents offers a reminder that bowling is a lifetime sport, and one in which virtually anyone can take part. Some alleys, for instance, reserve lanes for those who are visually impaired or confined to wheelchairs

No matter the participant, bowling can improve eye-hand coordination, balance and strength, while also providing a social outlet.

Bedford Center Visit To Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Bedford Center residents visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Aug. 14, where they were able to see some of the Garden’s recent upgrades — part of a decade-long project geared toward modernizing the place’s infrastructure and introducing greener practices — as well as staples like the Rose, Herb and Rock Gardens.

Linden Center Yomenco Rhythm and Dance and Yoga Class

The Linden Center recently hosted a Yomenco Rhythm and Dance and Yoga Class. Yoga certainly needs no introduction, and its benefits — strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health — have long been extolled. Yomenco, on the other hand, is a relatively new creation of New York City-based yoga instructor Bruce Van Horn. It combines breathing and stretching, not to mention flamenco music, and has been found to be especially beneficial to seniors.

July 2019 Newsletter from The Allure Group

Joel Landau Pens Piece for Thriveglobal.com

In a piece for Thriveglobal.com entitled “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty: What Sets A CEO Apart,” Allure Group CEO Joel Landau notes that business leaders’ top traits  are much the same as they were when Andrew Carnegie, the late steel magnate and philanthropist, outlined 31 of them over a century ago.

They include discipline and persistence, creativity and diplomacy, tact and likability. Joel, in fact, boiled Carnegie’s list to three essential qualities — relatability, adaptability and, for lack of a better word, stick-to-itiveness.

Joel noted in particular that a leader’s EQ (i.e., his emotional intelligence) was far more critical than his IQ, and added that such leaders encourage creativity, risk-taking and collaboration. He wrote that establishing a short- and long-term plan were of the utmost importance, and that a CEO should always be able to roll with the punches.

Melissa Powell Writes About Leadership During Uncertain Times

Change is constant in business, Allure COO Melissa Powell writes in a piece for Business.com entitled “How to Lead a Company in Transition,” and because of that a leader must be agile and quick-minded.

Melissa referenced a Harvard Business Review piece that calls the current business environment a VUCA World — i.e., one characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity — and also took note of the work of Jim Collins, head of a management lab in Boulder, Colo. Collins said change can come from within or without, and can be developmental, transitional or transformational.

Dealing with it, Melissa writes, requires discipline, transparency and creativity.

Fourth of July Celebrations Held at King David Center and Linden Center

The Fourth of July, observed as a holiday since 1870, celebrates the United States declaring its independence from Great Britain in 1776. Fun fact about the Fourth, however: Only John Hancock signed the document on that date; 55 others later followed suit.

Undeterred, the Linden Center celebrated this Independence Day with a barbecue, while the King David Center held an indoor party with festive decorations and entertainment.

Bedford Center Team-Building in Dumbo Park

June Newsletter from The Allure Group

“Inside The Allure Group’s Audition Strategy for Skilled Nursing Telehealth” in Skilled Nursing News

The Allure Group implemented Telehealth Solution as its telemedicine platform, though not without careful consideration. Allure tested out different systems at two of its six facilities over an 18-month period, with COO Melissa Powell monitoring the situation before making a choice. Telehealth is now used in all six buildings.

“I really just looked at stats and feedback from the line staff, and that was really my metric — how the staff felt interacting with them, and how many hospitalizations I was having and for what reasons,” Powell told SNN.

Telemedicine is viewed as a way to target higher-acuity patients, while also reducing patient readmissions. While the handoff from on-site doctors to third-party physicians was a particular concern at Allure, nurses were quick to embrace the new technology.

They work long hours. They work around the clock. They are asked to do difficult things under difficult circumstances. They comfort patients and families in trying times.

For all these reasons (and more), nurses deserve to be celebrated. And that’s exactly what happened in mid-May, when Nurses Week was observed at all six of The Allure Group’s facilities.

Celebrations and events took place across all of our centers to celebrate our incredible nurses. Gifts were given, luncheons were held, and a delicious breakfast in the case of our Bedford Center, for their night staff.

It was also Nursing Home Week this month which meant even more reason to celebrate and honor all of our incredible staff. Thank you very much to everyone who helped to put on these wonderful events and celebrations.

Allure Chairman, Joel Landau, featured in hhm global

The Allure Group Chariman, Joel Landau, wrote a piece this month for HHM Global titled “For Seniors, Managing Health Means Managing Money” where he included a list of tips and recommendations to help seniors manage their funds. From sticking to a budget to downsizing, the article discusses ways in which managing money can also help with managing your health.

COO Melissa Powell Published in Medcity News

The Allure Group’s COO Melissa Powell penned a piece on May 9 for the Medcity News entitled “Let’s Hang on to What We’ve Got: Why Employee Retention is Crucial,” in which she discussed the challenges of retaining quality staff.

The thrust of the piece is that while compensation is a factor, other things — like engagement, work-life balance and culture — matter just as much, if not more.

So too does leadership. As she wrote:

“(M)anagers can set the tone. They can serve as conduits from the C-suite, communicating to the rank and file the organization’s vision and direction. They can establish the culture, make workers feel wanted and yes, hold the fort when it comes to that slow (and costly) leak of talent.”

Further, she wrote, the management team would do well to connect with employees on their turf — to understand their day-to-day role and plot ways in which they can make it easier for them. That’s how a culture grows, and how organizations can minimize personnel losses.

Congrats to Winsome McLean-Davis: Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award Recipient

MANHATTAN TIMES, PATCH AND HARLEM WORLD MAGAZINE COVERED OUR HARLEM CENTER’S PAINT AND SIP EVENT

Clients in the Fortune Society’s Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) program continued a new initiative called ARTrition on May 20 at the Harlem Center, one that exposed residents to art and nutrition.

This program, a variation on Fortune’s “paint and sip” classes, called upon justice-involved individuals to not only teach residents the finer points of sketching, but also to serve them nutritious smoothies.

The classes were led by Guy Woodard, a Harlem native who began drawing at a young age by learning to skillfully replicate images around him. Woodard’s creativity eventually led him down a dark path, as he did several stints in federal prison for counterfeiting and forgery. After his incarceration, Woodard met with the head of The Fortune Society. The group provided support services, a renewed sense of purpose and a new way to use his talents. “Teaching is my favorite thing to do now,” said Woodard.

In the class Woodard taught for us, they worked on a drawing of President Barack Obama, a request from our residents.

Programs involving creativity have been found to give seniors a sense of purpose, afford them the opportunity to interact with others and experience personal growth, among other things.

Bedford Center held Pet Therapy for residents

It has been proven that pet therapy benefits seniors in many ways — that it positively impacts their heart health, gives them purpose and can reduce stress. Pets even improve socialization, since they can serve as unbiased listeners and give unconditional love.

With that in mind, the Bedford Center hosted a pet therapy session on May 2nd.

“The Value of a Varied Diet in Skilled Nursing Facilities”

As residents enter a skilled nursing facility it is vital to their overall well-being to feel a level of control over what they are eating each day, as well as to feel that their specific dietary needs have been addressed. These facilities must meet standard requirements to serve a certain level of nutritious meals and snacks to their residents and to achieve basic levels of food safety and preparation. But beyond this, they can tailor daily offerings to ensure their residents feel as comfortable and “at home” as possible.

At The Allure Group, several dietary options are offered, whether residents are looking for Asian, Latin or Kosher fare. Our six facilities also customize their menus to our clientele at each location. For example, we serve Kosher menus at our King David and Bedford Centers, Chinese food at our Hamilton Park location and American and Spanish dishes at the Crown Heights Center. We also change the menus every season, and hold tastings for our residents when we do so. With this mix of choices, residents can look forward to meal times, secure in the knowledge that they will be able to have what is familiar to them.

Such sandwiches are believed to date back to the early 1900s, but according to thetakeout.com, their origins could be traced all the way back to the 14th century.

Whatever the case, they are as delicious as ever today!

‘Something Extra’ for Bedford Center residents
IMG_1437 (1)

Something Extra, Yale University’s premier all-female a capella group, performed for the residents of the Bedford Center on March 14, which may be viewed as a continuing commitment on the part of The Allure Group to do … something extra.

Music has long been found to be beneficial to seniors’ overall well-being, mood and memory. It is also viewed as a stress reducer. All of this means that it serves as just part of the holistic care Allure endeavors to provide.

Something Extra dates back to 1977, according to the group’s website, and since then has performed throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean. The group’s appearance at the Bedford Center was part of a New York City Tour that also included a stop at Columbia University, among others.

The children also learned about these Halachos and gained inspiration to promote kovod in a Beis Medrash.

Harav Pinchas Spitzer opened the program by emphasizing to the children the importance of being kind to one another. Harav Chaim Yehyda Aryeh Breuer, principal of Skver Cheder in Borough Park, followed by discussing the significance of Morah Mikdash and not talking during davening. New Blog Post: Keeping Tabs on Seniors

Healthcare professionals walk a fine line when monitoring residents in a skilled nursing facility like those in The Allure Group’s Brooklyn- and Manhattan-based network: The goal is always to provide the best possible care, while at the same time providing for a resident’s comfort and respecting his or her privacy.

Video surveillance only goes so far. Also of value are such contact-free patient-monitoring systems as EarlySense, which is widely used by The Allure Group, and wearables like watches, pendants and even inner soles. Click here to read the full post.

Chinese new year celebrations

Chinese New Year this year, The Year of the Pig, officially begun this year on February 5th, 2019, and ended on February 19th.

The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept.

We spent time celebrating across multiple centers and want to thank everyone who helped out and attended our celebrations! Below are some fun photos from the celebration at our Bedford Center:

Eli Pick Award

The Allure Group is proud to announce that our Crown Heights Center, Hamilton Park, and Harlem Center have been recognized by the American College of Healthcare Administrators for the Eli Pick Leadership Award.  The award is presented each year to the skilled nursing facilities deemed to be among the nation’s top performers.

Winners are selected based on a variety of quality indicators, quality measures, overall census as well as three years of survey data.

Only 7% of the nation’s SNFs qualified for the honor. We are extremely excited and humbled to have been recognized. Congrats again to this year’s winners!

Team-building, one of an executive’s most critical tasks, is primarily a matter of promoting professional development and personal wellness within the workforce. So writes Allure Group COO Melissa Powell for the publication Business.com:

Developing great employees is a multifaceted task, but much of it starts by addressing their needs as professionals. In any industry, development and fulfillment are the major aspects of professional satisfaction, and any organization that works hard to foster these two qualities will find itself enjoying the rewards–motivated, self-starting, hardworking employees.

Melissa adds that it is also important to provide such perks as meditation rooms, yoga studios and exercise facilities, to help employees deal with the everyday stresses of their jobs.
