Mayo Clinic Gives Blockchain Another Try; Will It EVER Catch On In The Healthcare Sector?

Blockchain, a decentralized, immutable ledger most often associated with cryptocurrency, has great potential within the healthcare industry – potential to address privacy and data-security concerns. Potential to ward off cyberattacks. Potential, even, to make the payment process more efficient.

Blockchain can also aid in matters such as medication adherence and blockchain management, but widespread adoption has yet to take place. As Kali Dugampudi, chief technology officer at the healthcare payments company Zelis, told Healthcare IT News in a July 2022 interview, the sector has been “notoriously slow to adopt new technology,” meaning that we are “likely still years away from the healthcare industry widely adopting blockchain technology.”

Why Artificial Intelligence Will Play a Vital Role in ‘Work of the Future’

The pandemic has pushed many businesses to “the most important pivot point of the past couple years,” as Dannielle Appelhans, COO of the Massachusetts-based biopharmaceutical firm Rubius Therapeutics, said in a piece on the MIT Sloan website. Appelhans added that there now appears to be “a path to move forward into what will be our new normal, or our ‘work of the future.’”

No sector has been impacted as dramatically and obviously as healthcare. In the early weeks and months of the outbreak, organizations found themselves pushed to the breaking point by a large influx of patients. As a result, those organizations were left searching for time-efficient and cost-efficient ways to deal with a wide array of operational, clinical, and administrative challenges.

Artificial intelligence often proved to be the antidote, and is expected to be an even greater factor going forward, given the increased pressure clinicians face to produce accurate documentation as a result of value-based payment models. In addition, healthcare systems are continually striving to meet the challenges presented by a population that is growing older and older.

The Persistent Problem of Falls Among Seniors: What Can Be Done About It?

From our COO Melissa Powell this month in Senior Lifestyle Magazine, she writes,

The problem of falling among seniors cannot be overstated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older Americans suffer from 36 million falls each year, resulting in 32,000 deaths. That makes falls the leading cause of accidental death among seniors in the U.S.

Moreover, 20 percent of falls lead to injuries among those ages 65 and over, and some 3 million older adults require an emergency-room visit as a result of an injury suffered in a fall.

“It’s no secret that our population is aging; data from the 2020 U.S. Census shows that by 2030, all Baby Boomers—defined as those born between 1946 and 1964—will be at least 65. And as they continue to age, it will shape not only public policy but personal need.

Caring for older family members—whether they are aging in place at home, or living in a care facility—is a difficult and exhausting job. Dr. Grace Whiting, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregivers, is concerned about the increasing need for caregiving and health services for people over age 65.

President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill was designed to increase paid family leave for those who care for seniors and Medicaid benefits for those who require care…”

Harlem and Linden Residents Enjoying RESTORE-Skills

Residents at the Harlem and Linden Centers have been enjoying RESTORE-Skills, a computer-based gamification platform that enables them to engage in fun activities that make it possible to build on clinical outcomes and expand their skills.

“It engages them a little bit more,” said Lindsey Day, Linden Center’s Director of Rehabilitation.

She noted that some residents might find rehab or an everyday exercise routine to be drudgery. But it’s different with RESTORE-Skills, which was implemented earlier this year. Maybe the residents can make use of the skiing, bowling or soccer games that are part of the platform. A webcam will track their movements, with the hope being that they will improve their strength, balance, coordination and endurance.

The activities departments at the two facilities use RESTORE-Skills more than the rehab departments, according to Day. But there are occasions where she or one of her staffers might be timing how long a resident is standing while engaged in a game.

“And,” she said, “it kind of motivates them. The idea is that it motivates them a little bit more to stand longer or participate in more balance tasks, or get stronger, or improve their endurance and their breathing and their strength.”

Day said the platform can be used via any of the televisions in the day rooms in either of the facilities, as well as residents’ bedside tablets. She also said it is possible for residents to compete against family members remotely, provided they can coordinate with each other. And finally, residents can continue to use RESTORE-Skills once they are discharged from either of the facilities, provided they retain their usernames and passwords.

Day described the system as being “pretty user-friendly,” and added that residents have taken to the virtual slot machine in particular.

 “If they win, they get a T-shirt,” she said. “A lot of the residents, they enjoy those slot games.”

The Allure Group celebrated Nurses Week this month and was able to publicly recognize many of our nurses and the hard work and dedication that they give our residents and patients all year!

Please join us in recognizing Allure’s Chief Clinical Officer, Faina Kaganov. Faina’s extensive background in cardiac ICU and critical care nursing has made her a shining example to the clinical staff that she leads at Allure. Faina also proudly served as a Director of Nursing herself for many years prior to joining Allure. Thank you to Faina for her tireless commitment to not just our patients, but our nursing teams as well!

Our next Nurses Week 2022 honoree is The Allure Group’s VP of Clinical Reimbursement, Sofia Yakubova, RN RAC-CT. Sofia is a true testament of the Allure ambition, starting her career as a Unit RN prior to being promoted to Nursing Supervisor. After several years, Sofia moved into the MDS department where she soon became a Director before ultimately ascending to her current role as the organization’s VP of Clinical Reimbursement. Please join us in saluting Sofia for all that she does for Allure!
